CRPD Training Guide

Orange book cover with the title "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Training Guide: Professional Training Series, 19"

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Training Guide is meant to be used in developing a training course on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) or the Optional Protocol. The training guide assumes that the person facilitating the training already understands the international human rights system but may or may not be familiar with the CRPD.

A trainer can use the guide in teaching about the CRPD to government representatives, parliamentarians, judges, representatives of various United Nations agencies, funders, representatives of national human rights institutions, people with disabilities and their representative organizations, civil society organizations, media representatives, professionals in areas such as health, education, and so on.

The guide provides an overview of the CRPD and the Optional Protocol, for trainers and for other people who want to learn more about these human rights instruments. This publication also recommends interactive activities that trainers can use in teaching the main lessons in each of the eight suggested modules in a training session. The modules are meant to:

  1. Review what a disability is
  2. Introduce the CRPD
  3. Discuss how it is ratified
  4. Consider how CRPD implementation is measured
  5. Address discrimination on the basis of disability
  6. Teach about national-level mechanisms for implementing and monitoring the CRPD
  7. Explain how to report to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
  8. Instruct on the Optional Protocol

Published by the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner.

Translations of the CRPD training guide (and many other human rights training guides) are available in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.
